St. Josephine Bakhita
February 8

She was born in the Darfur region of Sudan. She was captured at 8 years old and named Bakhita which means “lucky one”. In her early years she was not so lucky as she was sold into slavery where she was tortured, disfigured by tattoos, made to go on long marches chained and deprived of food and water. She was bought and sold five times, before she became a nursemaid for an Italian girl. When the family was moving back to Africa, Josephine and the child remained at the convent. When the family returned, Josephine refused to go as she was studying to be baptized. She was allowed to stay as the Italian government had outlawed slavery. She remained at the convent and was known as the “Universal Sister” as she loved and cared for all people.

From the National Black Catholic News
Chicago Archdiocese Begins Sainthood Process for First Black US Priest
Catholic News Service
"Father Augustine Tolton was the first U.S. priest of African descent and may one day be a saint from the Archdiocese of Chicago." The archdiocese is introducing the priest's cause for canonization, according to an announcement by Chicago Cardinal Francis E. George.
"It is appropriate that, during this Year for Priests, we recall our forebears who were holy men in the presbyterate" of the archdiocese, the cardinal told the Catholic New World, Chicago archdiocesan newspaper. Having Father Tolton as a saint would be a blessing for the whole Catholic Church but, in particular, for Catholics in Chicago, he said."
"First of all, saints intercede," he said. "We need his prayers and his help, especially to become a more united church. Secondly, his example of priestly dedication, his learning and preaching, are great examples for our seminarians and priests and should inspire the laity."
