Copyright Law and Videos
Recently we have received a
number of inquiries about the legality of using videos in catechetical programs.
Generally, videos that are purchased through educational publishers and are labeled as
being for educational or classroom use can be used in catechetical programs.
However, it is not permissible to purchase one copy of a video and then make copies for
the entire catechetical program.
Videos that are labeled
"for home use only" may be used in catechetical programs under some
circumstances. Such videos may be shown in a catechetical classroom as long as they
are being shown in the course of face to face teaching activities.
Concerns over the
permissibility of using videos in catechetical programs can be minimized with the purchase
of a license from the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation ("MPLC"), which most
parishes have already done.
MPLC issues a blanket
license that permits an institution to publicly show rented or purchased pre-recorded
videos from more than 45 participating studios, producers and distributors, including
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (pre-1986 titles), Republic Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Walt Disney
Pictures and Warner Bros. The MPLC license does not permit a parish or school to
charge an admission to watch the video.
To enable parishes to
publicly show pre-recorded video, and to obtain the best possible discount, the
Archdiocese has negotiated with MPLC for the distribution of the blanket license to those
parishes that would want one. The Archdiocese has agreed to act as liaison and to
collect the annual license fees from participating churches. MPLC's blanket license
is a site license, meaning that each facility that publicly shows pre-recorded videos must
have its own license.
The effective date of the
current licenses is August 1st to July 31st. Renewal letters are sent out around May
1st.

II. What is happening in the area of the
catechetical textbook approval list?
Basal religious education texts on the
elementary and junior high level that have been found in conformity with the
Catechism by the Bishops' Committee, therefore are considered to be doctrinally correct
and complete, are approved for use in the parishes and schools of the Archdiocese of
Chicago. A letter to that effect from Cardinal George went to all parishes and
schools in December, 2000. We are aware that some texts have not yet gone through
the Bishops' Committee on the Catechism. These will be included in the approved
list as they are found in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I got a copy of the MPLC list and the producer of Veggie Tales isn't on it. I want
to show it to some of my preschool parents. What do I do?
Veggie Tales is produced by
Big Idea Productions. They have a website which addresses your question, "Can I
have permission to show your videos in a public setting?" Their response is:
"Thank you for wanting to share Veggie Tales with others! We'd be happy to
give you permission to show our videos in a public setting, as long as you do not charge
admission of any kind, including asking for donations or charging to recover the cost of
the viewing facility. Any other requests to use Big Idea copyrighted material,
including images and music, require special permission. Please send your request
