ArticleOneTranslationThe Eucharist is the Heart of the Christian Life

by Juan Carlos Farías-González, Vicariate IV Catechetical Coordinator

Two fundamental duties that parents have in the preparation for the sacrament of the Eucharist are to communicate the Christian and human values and to attend Mass frequently as a family.

ArticleTwoPreparing the Family for First Eucharist

by Mary Kay Burberry, DRE at St. Francis in Orland Park

Children attend religious education but return home to families who are in need of catechesis. The family does not always feel equipped to nurture the faith growth of their child, relying on the religious education staff to train their children for First Eucharist.
At St. Francis of Assisi, we deliberately involve the parent in the catechetical program through a number of take home lessons, parent/child celebrations and family Mass lessons designed to bring the family into an understanding of what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. We work on participation and understanding of the Mass throughout the year with the household.

Linked to this article is the two year preparation program for First Eucharist and the Family activity we send home. We involve the family along with the rest of the parish community in acknowledging and celebrating the reception of this important sacrament of initiation.

ArticleThreeFamily Catechesis for First Eucharist at St. Linus Parish

by Cheryl Antos, DRE at St. Linus in Oak Lawn

We have a process of preparation for First Reconciliation in the fall of the year, with an initial parent/child meeting in September.  Children are invited to an Enrollment Mass in October, where a special blessing is made over the children and their families as they embark on their preparation for both sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

For First Eucharist, we hold an initial meeting in January right after the New Year.  This meeting comprises of a simple understanding of meal sharing and praying as a family.  Emphasis of the importance of Eucharist as the source and summit of faith life is also addressed.  This meeting is geared for parents, but the children are not excluded.
